CPAs and Legislators feel the need for speed
Ready or not, the 2026 Legislative Session starts today. The consensus from all available reports is that legislators are looking for ways to get in, legislate, and get out with time to spare. Some might suggest that is how all legislative sessions should be, but that would depend on a person’s priorities.
There is no shortage of issues for this session. Plateauing revenues with rising healthcare, transportation and education costs, workforce and economic development projects and SSUT are just a few of those priorities.
ASCPA's priorities for this session include working with the Alabama Department of Revenue on any tax legislation made necessary by the One Big Beautiful Bill, further refining tax reforms related to remote workers and our Pathways to CPA Act (HB59). Because HB59 impacts current college seniors, we are advocating that the Legislature move quickly for its passage. The bill is already on the agenda to be considered by the House committee tomorrow. In Talladega terms, we’re going 200 mph. We will keep you updated on its progress.
We are working to improve how we keep you updated on issues relevant to CPAs. 1) Keep an eye out for our Watchlist to be posted and updated on the Advocacy page of our website. 2) Subscribe to the Alabama CPA Podcast to hear the VERY latest about the session and other Society news.
I can’t end without making another plea for your investment in the Alabama CPA PAC. In this election season, we are counting on the PAC to support legislators that support the work of Alabama CPAs. Click on our website’s Advocacy page for more information on how to invest.
Once again, I am honored to represent you and the interests of Alabama CPAs again this year. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at rpearson@alabama.cpa.
